DeSantis and Leading Florida Health Official Issue Urgent Warning: COVID Vaccines Not Recommended for Individuals under 65

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the state’s surgeon general are now cautioning against the use of updated COVID-19 vaccines for individuals under the age of 65. This decision goes against the recent recommendation made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

During a panel discussion on Wednesday, Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, alongside other physicians who have questioned the COVID vaccine, expressed his concerns about its safety. Ladapo incorrectly stated that there is “not a drop of clinical trial data” supporting the vaccines.

“We are in a world where the CDC and FDA, when it comes to COVID at least, are taking their own path without explanation in terms of data and common sense,” Ladapo said.

“Considering the degree of immunity among the general population and the ongoing safety concerns, especially regarding young people and low-risk individuals during this stage of the pandemic, I believe it is not advisable to administer the vaccines,” Ladapo added.

Governor DeSantis, who is running for president, has gained national attention for his public disagreements with top health officials in the Biden administration regarding COVID-19 policies.

“I will not allow the FDA and CDC to use healthy Floridians as test subjects for new booster shots that have not been proven safe or effective,” DeSantis stated. “Once again, Florida is leading the way in providing guidance based on truth, not mandates from Washington.”

Appointed by DeSantis in 2021, Ladapo has been vocal in his opposition to federal health policies and has previously expressed doubts about the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccinations.

In March, Ladapo received a letter from the CDC and FDA, cautioning him about fueling vaccine hesitancy and potentially harming Florida’s older population.

Although Ladapo’s latest guidance is not mandatory, it advises individuals aged 65 and above to consult with their healthcare providers regarding vaccination.

On Tuesday, the CDC officially endorsed the administration of updated COVID-19 vaccines to individuals aged 6 months and older.

While there may be differing opinions among health experts and the CDC’s advisory panel regarding the level of benefits for younger and healthier individuals, there is no recommendation against receiving the vaccine.

Hundreds of millions of vaccine doses have been administered with minimal adverse effects, and the CDC has described its post-vaccine monitoring as “the most rigorous safety monitoring in U.S. history.”
