Deputies: Violent Tragedy Erupts as Argument over Pride Flag Results in Fatal Shooting of Californian Store Owner

CNN

A tragic incident occurred when a clothing store owner in Southern California was shot and killed following an argument over a rainbow Pride flag displayed outside her business. This act highlights the ongoing violence and threats faced by the LGBTQ+ community in America.

The victim, Laura Ann “Lauri” Carleton, aged 66, lost her life due to a gunshot wound at her store, Mag.Pi, located in Cedar Glen, approximately 80 miles east of Los Angeles. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Following the shooting, the suspected shooter, who remains unidentified, encountered the deputies and was killed in a confrontation. The officers responded with lethal force to apprehend the suspect who was fleeing the scene.

According to the investigation, the suspect made derogatory remarks about the rainbow flag displayed outside the store prior to the shooting. The release from the authorities did not disclose the identity of the suspect, and fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the encounter.

This incident is a stark reminder of the violence and threats faced by the LGBTQ+ community, which have intensified amidst an alarming wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in 2023, as reported by the Human Rights Campaign.

Kelley Robinson, the president of the Human Rights Campaign, declared a national state of emergency for the LGBTQ+ community in June, stressing that LGBTQ+ Americans are living in a state of crisis. The threats and violence against the community are not merely perceived but are real, tangible, and perilous.

A memorial sits outside a clothing store in Cedar Glen, California, where deputies say the owner was killed following an argument over a Pride flag.

Carleton, although not identifying as LGBTQ+, was an advocate for the community as affirmed by Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ+. They described her as a true ally and expressed deep sadness over her tragic loss.

California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the shooting, expressing his horror through a social media post. He emphasized that such hateful acts have no place in the state of California.
