Delta Passengers Stranded on Island Recount Being Told to Show ‘Gratitude’

Passengers on a Delta flight experienced a 12-hour delay in Terceira, a Portuguese island, after their flight from Ghana to New York was diverted due to a mechanical issue with a backup oxygen system. The passengers were confined to a partitioned section of the airport and were allegedly told by airport representatives not to incite a revolution. They claimed that they were not provided with proper meals and had to plead for food. Additionally, some passengers had dietary restrictions preventing them from eating the ham sandwiches they were given. Airport representatives provided conflicting information, including promises of a rescue ship and copied-and-pasted messages. Passengers were frustrated by the lack of communication from Delta and the dismissive attitude of the airport staff. Ultimately, a flight arrived to pick up the passengers after 12 hours. Upon reaching New York, the passengers were met with an overwhelmed Delta staff who were unable to address their complaints. Some passengers had to make their own arrangements for accommodation and new flights. The situation prompted Ghanian rapper Sakordie to express his disappointment on X (formerly known as Twitter) for missing a performance in Detroit. Delta claimed that the passengers were provided with meals during the delay in Terceira and that poor weather conditions on the US east coast caused staff to be overwhelmed upon arrival in New York. The passengers were also promised refunds, although one passenger reported not yet receiving their refund or their lost luggage. The Lajes Airport has not responded to inquiries.
