David Peterson strives to regain the 2022 performance that propelled him to success

David Peterson is determined to make improvements without making drastic changes. After struggling with adjustments that affected his performance, the 27-year-old left-handed pitcher returned to his successful form from last year in a recent game against the Brewers. This marked a promising comeback for Peterson, who had previously been sent down to Triple-A Syracuse.

During the game, Peterson showcased his skills by pitching six shutout innings, allowing only five hits and three walks while striking out five batters. His next start is scheduled for the series finale against the Giants on Sunday.

In an interview before the Mets’ win over the Giants, Peterson explained his approach to getting back on track. He emphasized the importance of returning to his mechanics from last year and adopting a mindset focused on one pitch at a time, competing, and maintaining control over things within his power. Additionally, he aimed to regain his confidence in his pitches, particularly his slider.

Peterson had a challenging start to the season, with a record of 1-6 and an 8.08 ERA in eight starts before being demoted. In Triple-A, he improved with a 4.86 ERA in seven starts before being called up again.

Last year, Peterson had an impressive 3.83 ERA and excelled with his slider, which had a low batting average against it and a high whiff rate. However, this year, his slider has struggled, with batters hitting .367 against it and a decreased whiff rate.

Reflecting on the issue, Peterson mentioned that he had a feeling about his slider that initially seemed right but later realized that the movement and execution were off. He discovered that reverting to his old mechanics, particularly with his hand positioning, played a significant role in getting his slider back on track.

Ultimately, Peterson aims to rediscover the elements of his game that made him reliable in 2022, including his slider. By focusing on his mechanics, rhythm, and pitch execution, he hopes to regain his form and contribute to the team’s success.
