Daughter in distress alleges her mother with cancer was ‘abandoned’ by hospital without necessary post-treatment support

A daughter has come forward with a distressing account of her mother’s mistreatment by the NHS. Sylva Faye, residing in the London Borough of Brent, took to TikTok to share her experience, shedding light on her mother’s tragic passing in November 2022. According to Sylva, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and tragically died just 11 weeks later, without receiving any support during her illness. Sylva lamented the fact that her mother had been in good health before her diagnosis, aside from experiencing arm pain attributed to gardening by her GP.

The harrowing episode began when Sylva’s mother sought help for stomach pain at the emergency room unaccompanied while Sylva was at work. Shockingly, her mother’s number was overlooked for 15 hours, leaving her alone and unattended. When Sylva finally arrived at the hospital, she discovered her mother sitting alone on a bench, visibly distraught and neglected.

It was during this visit that doctors discovered a mass on her mother’s abdomen, which turned out to be advanced pancreas cancer that had already spread. Sylva expressed her disappointment that the severity of her mother’s condition hadn’t been properly conveyed to her, even after her week-long hospital stay. Instead of receiving proper aftercare, Sylva was sent home with numerous medications that she was expected to administer without any guidance or support.

Sylva, with no nursing background, took it upon herself to create charts to keep track of her mother’s medications due to the hospital’s failure to provide one. She described her frustration at the lack of assistance from medical professionals, prompting her to reach out to doctors she knew and even her father’s friends for help. Despite these efforts, nobody came to check on her mother and a promised community pain team failed to show up after her discharge. Additionally, repeated attempts to contact the hospital were met with unanswered calls and unfulfilled appointments.

To make matters worse, the scheduled chemotherapy appointments were repeatedly deferred until they eventually deemed it unnecessary. However, when Sylva threatened to administer her mother’s medication after her desperate pleas and deteriorating condition, healthcare professionals finally made an appearance. Unfortunately, their arrival was marred by harsh criticisms and an unfriendly demeanor towards Sylva, leaving her feeling like a criminal in her own home.

Sylva revealed that her mother was never made aware of the seriousness of her illness and only learned about her terminal condition when a member of the palliative care team broke the news. This lack of communication and support, coupled with the stressful experience, has taken a toll on Sylva’s mental health. She now suffers from panic and anxiety attacks and is currently on a waitlist for therapy. Despite her need for bereavement counseling, Sylva has been unable to access affordable therapy and has turned to TikTok and a Go Fund Me page for support.

Since sharing her story on TikTok, Sylva has received an outpouring of support and has received numerous donations on her Go Fund Me page. She is just £500 shy of her £3000 goal. The funds raised will contribute towards private therapy to cope with her grief and potentially hire a solicitor to seek justice and regain stability in her life. Sylva also mentioned that her father, who was separated from her mother at the time of her passing, has experienced severe stress and required medical treatment as a result.

In conclusion, Sylva’s heart-wrenching account exposes the failures in her mother’s care within the NHS system. The lack of aftercare, support, communication, and empathy shown to her mother during her battle with cancer is a nightmarish ordeal no one should have to endure.
