Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills Safety, Returns to NFL Field After Cardiac Arrest

Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety who was at the center of multiple conspiracy theories regarding his cardiac arrest incident on the field, has made a triumphant return to football. Hamlin made his comeback in the Bills’ first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on August 12. Any doubts surrounding the authenticity of his identity were proved wrong as Hamlin delivered an impressive performance, recording three solo tackles in the Bills’ 23-19 victory over the Colts.

NFL preseason game scores hold little significance, much like political polls a year before a Presidential election. They are essentially meaningless. Therefore, the focus of the game was Hamlin’s successful return to the NFL. It has been just over eight months since Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after receiving a blow to the chest during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In my previous article for Forbes, I highlighted how many expert cardiologists suspected that Hamlin experienced commotio cordis, a rare event where chest trauma disrupts the heart’s electrical signals. This diagnosis aligns with the circumstances and history of the incident. However, anti-vaxxers and spreaders of misinformation disregarded this possibility and instead blamed the Covid-19 vaccine for Hamlin’s cardiac arrest without providing any concrete evidence.

These individuals persisted in pushing the narrative of a “vaccine injury” and even circulated a conspiracy theory suggesting Hamlin had a body double. However, as I previously mentioned in my Forbes coverage, there was no substantial evidence supporting this claim. Yet, evidence seems to be unnecessary in the current climate of baseless assertions.

The Buffalo Bills shared photos of Hamlin warming up before the game on Twitter (or X, as it may be called nowadays), along with an emoji depicting a heart formed by two hands:

The majority of responses to the tweet were positive, encouraging, and welcoming. However, unsurprisingly, there were still some responses perpetuating the vaccine injury and body double narratives. One anonymous account, seemingly verified by Twitter, responded with vaccine emojis and the statement, “That ain’t the real Damar lol.” Quite amusing indeed.

Despite the persistence of these conspiracy theories, it is crucial to acknowledge that Hamlin’s return on Saturday is a testament to his dedication and legitimate medical treatment. Following the cardiac arrest incident on the field at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hamlin received prompt care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before being rushed to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. After a week, he was transferred to Buffalo General Hospital in New York, where he was discharged nine days later. Three months after collapsing, Hamlin mentioned that he was “working out” with the Bills team. He progressed to participating fully in training camp throughout July and has now successfully reclaimed his position as an NFL player.
