Dalhousie University Professors Express Concerns about Canada-India Tension Affecting International Students in Halifax

Growing tensions between Canada and India are capturing attention in the Maritimes.

Experts in international development anticipate an impact from India’s suspension of visa services in Canada. However, opinions are divided when it comes to the long-term effects of the dispute.

Professors at Dalhousie University in Halifax believe that the pause will disrupt travel, particularly leading up to Diwali.

“The suspension of visa services poses a problem for Canadians planning to travel in the next couple of months,” says Nissim Mannathukkaren. “If visa services are suspended, they won’t be able to travel even if they have purchased tickets.”

Sikh community in Maritimes expresses safety concerns amid federal government’s allegations

“Many Canadian families have connections to India, and now their ability to travel back is completely on hold, unless they have Indian citizenship,” explains Robert Huish.

The diplomatic dispute between the two countries stems from the federal government’s allegation that India is responsible for the murder of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18th.

Huish is concerned about the impact on Indian students studying in Canadian campuses, as they may be put in a vulnerable position.

“During this difficult time, it’s important to support these communities. We should remember that the tension is between governments, not between people,” says Huish. He also expresses concerns about the impact on the technology sector.

Mannathukkaren believes there is no need to panic.
