Cycling: Great Britain Men’s Team Pursuit Fails to Advance at World Championships

Great Britain’s hopes in the men’s team pursuit were dashed on the first day of the UCI World Cycling Championships in Glasgow. During the qualifiers in the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome, rider Charlie Tanfield fell, leading to their elimination from the competition. Tanfield’s crash resulted in a concussion and a trip to the hospital. On a more positive note, Will Tidball won the gold medal in the men’s scratch race, providing some redemption for the team. Other winners included Chloé Dygert of the USA in the women’s individual pursuit and Germany in the women’s team sprint. In other news, Biniam Girmay, Africa’s leading professional cyclist, finally received his UK visa less than 24 hours after it was brought to attention that he and other Eritrean athletes were awaiting a decision. Despite the delay, Girmay’s absence from the championships was attributed to a crash rather than a visa issue. In track para-cycling, Jody Cundy set a new world record in the men’s C4 omnium flying 200m. However, Cundy’s primary focus remains the “kilo” event as he aims for his 14th consecutive world title. Outside of the championships, former British Cycling and Team Sky doctor Richard Freeman has declined to represent himself at a National Anti-Doping Panel to address allegations of two anti-doping rule breaches. This decision could result in a four-year doping ban for Freeman, who was previously struck off the medical register after an inquiry into the delivery of testosterone patches to Team Sky and British Cycling headquarters. It is noteworthy that another doctor affiliated with Team Sky, Geert Leinders, received a life ban for similar offenses.
