Criticism directed at NSW government for proposed seizing of funds from individuals’ bank accounts due to unpaid Covid-19 hotel quarantine fees

The NSW government is facing criticism for its aggressive approach to collecting debts from individuals who stayed in quarantine hotels during the Covid-19 pandemic. Visitors to the state have been hit with hefty bills and threatened with access to their bank accounts if payment is not made. One such case involved Vanessa’s son Nathan, who received a notice demanding payment of $3,065 for his stay in hotel quarantine two years ago. The notice warned that action would be taken to recover the debt, including accessing bank accounts and seizing property. Vanessa attempted to pay the bill on behalf of her son, but was told she needed his authorization. She expressed concern that if the government could access Nathan’s bank account without permission, they may also flag his passport. Vanessa described the situation as hypocritical and expressed her belief that her son would end up paying the bill reluctantly due to fear of repercussions. The NSW government introduced fees for hotel quarantine in July 2020, charging $3,000 for one adult, $1,000 for each additional adult, and $500 for each child over the age of three. Debts were waived for those who had booked their flights before July 18, 2020. Revenue NSW reported that $58.6 million in unpaid hotel quarantine bills remained outstanding as of June last year. Brianna, another caller, shared her experience of receiving an unexpected bill for her stay in a quarantine hotel and expressed surprise at the lack of prior notification. Revenue NSW has been requested to provide a comment on the matter.
