Consumer affairs: HSBC raises scam concerns regarding my John Lewis Partnership credit card

Have you been contacted by other individuals regarding their John Lewis Partnership credit card?

I’m asking because I recently received a letter from HSBC informing me that I’ve been transferred to their services, but I haven’t received any communication from John Lewis. In the past, HSBC used to handle the John Lewis card, but last year, all customers were switched to another company called NewDay.

I was concerned that this might be a scam when I received the alert letter from HSBC, as they were asking me to set up a direct debit. To clarify the situation, I reached out to John Lewis Finance customer care, and I spoke to an individual who seemed just as confused as I was. Apparently, they have been receiving similar calls.

As this is my primary credit card, it is crucial for me to understand what is happening. Unfortunately, the representative was unable to provide any clarification.

This situation seems suspicious or displays a lack of competence. Can you provide any insight into this matter?

Upon initial consideration, I, like yourself, believed this to be a scam, where fraudsters attempt to obtain people’s banking information. However, in this case, it appears that it is not.

A representative from John Lewis Finance stated, “We want to assure customers that the correspondence they have received from HSBC UK is authentic.

“This letter has been sent as a legal requirement regarding their previous partnership cards. We apologize for any confusion caused.”

They also clarified that the letter only applies to customers with outstanding balances, and if you don’t have one, you can disregard it.

Considering you pay off your balance entirely each month, it is unclear why you received the letter, but it was wise of you to question it.

The switch to NewDay was a challenging process for many cardholders, and incidents like this do little to inspire confidence or loyalty.

We appreciate receiving letters; however, we are unable to respond individually. You can email us at [email protected] or send your letter to Consumer Champions, Money, the Guardian, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. Please provide a daytime phone number. The submission and publication of all letters are subject to our terms and conditions
