Conservatives Garner Support from Greeks to Establish Government

The conservative New Democracy party of Greece has emerged victorious in the country’s second election in just five weeks. Based on early returns, official projections indicate that the party, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is set to win 40.5% of the vote. This landslide victory grants them enough parliamentary seats to form a government for a second four-year term. Meanwhile, the left-wing Syriza party, their main rival, has suffered a devastating defeat with projected support of under 18%, even worse than their performance in the previous elections in May. Despite accusations from the opposition party about the New Democracy party posing a threat to democratic traditions, voters seemed more concerned about economic issues.

The election took place shortly after a migrant ship tragically capsized off the western coast of Greece, resulting in numerous deaths and disappearances. This incident raised questions about Greek authorities and their strict migration policy. However, the disaster did not significantly impact the election outcome. The projections suggest that Mitsotakis’ party will secure enough seats in Parliament, thanks to a change in the electoral law that awards bonus seats to the winning party. In the previous election, conducted under a proportional representation system, the New Democracy party fell just five seats short of a majority, despite winning 41% of the vote.

In total, eight parties are expected to surpass the 3% threshold required to enter Parliament, including a far-right party and an ultra-religious party. Mitsotakis focused his campaign on ensuring economic growth and political stability as Greece continues its gradual recovery from a decade-long financial crisis. Alexis Tsipras, his main rival and former prime minister from 2015 to 2019, referred to the election as crucial in determining the quality of Greek democracy. Tsipras emphasized the significance of having either an unchecked government or a strong opposition. Mitsotakis expressed confidence that Greek voters would make mature decisions for their personal prosperity and the stability of the country.

Overall, the New Democracy party’s landslide victory signifies their mandate to lead Greece for another four years, prioritizing economic growth and political stability.
