Connecticut Reports First Flu and RSV Deaths of the Season

The unfortunate news has arrived as state health officials in Connecticut have confirmed the first deaths related to the flu and RSV.

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the flu death occurred in an adult aged between 80 and 90 from Middlesex County, while the RSV death occurred in a similar-aged adult in New Haven County.

Officials from the DPH have scheduled a news conference to address these respiratory illnesses at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The DPH has stated that no further details about the patients will be disclosed.

In addition to these deaths, the department has reported 67 COVID-19 associated deaths in Connecticut residents during the month of October. It is worth noting that historically in Connecticut, the majority of COVID-19 deaths have been among individuals aged 55 and older.

“This is a tragic reminder that the 2023-24 respiratory viral disease season is already an active one,” expressed Manisha Juthani, MD., commissioner of the DPH. “As we approach the holidays, I strongly urge all Connecticut residents, particularly older individuals and those with multiple medical conditions, to ensure they are up to date on their seasonal vaccines.”
