Commerce Secretary’s Trip to China Amid Heightened Tensions

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo is scheduled to visit China next week, according to an announcement by the Department of Commerce on Tuesday. This visit by Raimondo follows recent visits by President Biden and other top U.S. officials, and aims to enhance communication between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on various issues. Raimondo’s trip will take her to Beijing and Shanghai, where she will meet with senior officials from the PRC and U.S. business leaders. The Secretary is looking forward to engaging in constructive discussions regarding the U.S.-China commercial relationship, challenges faced by American businesses, and potential areas of cooperation.

In an effort to ease tensions, Raimondo joins other members of Biden’s cabinet who have traveled to China. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited China in July, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip had been postponed from February due to the controversy surrounding a Chinese spy balloon. Tensions between the U.S. and China have heightened in recent years due to economic tariffs, trade disputes, and the relationship between China and Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The U.S. has also condemned China’s aggression in the South China Sea.

To strengthen domestic production of certain technologies and curb Chinese military capabilities, President Biden has implemented measures such as an executive order blocking American investments in specific Chinese sectors to mitigate risks to national security.
