Coast Guard embarks on mission to Titanic, searching for missing submarine

June 19 (UPI) — The US Coast Guard is currently engaged in a search and rescue operation for a small submarine that has gone missing off the coast of Newfoundland. The submarine was on an expedition to explore the sunken wreckage of the HMS Titanic, located approximately 400 miles off the coast.

Lieutenant Jordan Hart confirmed to CBS News that efforts are underway to locate the submersible and ensure the safe return of its crewmembers.

OceanGate Expeditions, the company behind the expedition, expressed their focus on the well-being of the crewmembers and their families. They also expressed gratitude for the assistance received from various government agencies and deep-sea companies in their mission to reestablish contact with the submersible.

The exact number of people on board the missing submarine is currently unknown.

CBC News reported that the submersible was reported missing after it failed to return as scheduled on Sunday evening.

It is worth noting that OceanGate utilizes Starlink technology to maintain communication during undersea expeditions. OceanGate is a private company founded in Everett, Washington in 2009. They specialize in chartering and conducting scientific exploration using their fleet of five-person submersibles, capable of diving to depths of up to 2.5 miles.

On their website, the company provides detailed information about their 10-day mission to visit the Titanic site. Joining this tour comes at a cost of $250,000.
