Bonnaroo attendees mistakenly dial 911 in response to new iPhone safety feature

Last weekend, panic ensued at Bonnaroo, but not quite to the level of a “panic at the disco.” The reason behind the panic was a new feature on iPhones that caused chaos on the festival’s first day, Thursday, June 15. Numerous accidental calls to emergency services were made due to a malfunction with the iPhone’s feature, which automatically alerts emergency services if it detects a crash. The Manchester Police Department took to Twitter to explain the situation, mentioning that the calls were likely a result of the “Crash Detection Mode” on Apple iPhones. They urged festival-goers to be mindful and consider deactivating this feature until Bonnaroo concludes. According to the Apple website, when an iPhone detects a severe car crash, it displays an alert and initiates an emergency call after 20 seconds, unless canceled. Throughout the four-day music festival, there were multiple calls to emergency services caused by this iPhone mode.

In the event of unresponsiveness, the iPhone plays an audio message for emergency services, providing them with your approximate location coordinates. The Bonnaroo organizers also took to Twitter to address the issue, urging everyone to work together to resolve it. They shared simple instructions on how to turn off the “Crash Detection Mode” through the iPhone settings. Fortunately, there were no reported crashes at the music festival, which featured popular acts such as Foo Fighters, Paramore, Korn, Knocked Loose, and AFI. This is not the first time this feature has led to unintentional 911 calls. In January, reports surfaced that the newly introduced feature overwhelmed 911 centers near ski mountains with accidental automated calls from fallen skiers’ phones and watches.
