President Biden defended this decision, citing discussions with allies and lawmakers, and the urgent need to address Ukraine’s ammunition shortage.
The move has drawn mixed reactions within the Democratic Party, with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) arguing that these bombs should never be used, while Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) supporting the administration’s decision.
Markarova acknowledged the existing issue of unexploded weapons in Ukraine, as Russia has been deploying these munitions during the invasion. She mentioned Ukraine’s efforts in demining and ensuring responsible use. The ambassador emphasized that Ukraine does not deploy these weapons in civilian areas and follows strict protocols to record their use. She also highlighted the role of deminers in making liberated areas safe.
