U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Monday in an effort to ease tensions between the two nations. This meeting marks the first high-level contact between the superpowers since November. President Xi expressed optimism about the summit, stating that the two sides had reached agreement on specific issues, which he considered positive progress.

“The Chinese side has made our position clear, and the two sides have agreed to follow through on the common understanding that President Biden and I had reached in Bali,” said President Xi.

The meeting between Blinken and Xi follows their previous meeting in Bali in November, where they agreed to take concrete steps to repair the strained relationship. Blinken’s visit to Beijing is the first by a U.S. secretary of state in five years. During their conversation, President Xi urged Blinken to make positive contributions to stabilizing China-U.S. relations.

The meeting took place in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, confirmed by state television. Given the current tensions over Taiwan, China’s actions in the South China Sea, and the recent incident involving a Chinese spy balloon, the Blinken-Xi meeting is not expected to result in any new agreements.

After his meeting with Blinken, Wang Yi, China’s top foreign affairs adviser, blamed the United States’ “wrong perception” of China for the deteriorating relations between the two countries. Wang emphasized that Taiwan is a “core” interest for China and there is no room for compromise on this issue.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Blinken’s trip to Beijing comes at a critical juncture in China-U.S. relations and called for a choice between dialogue or confrontation, and cooperation or conflict. Wang emphasized the need to reverse the downward spiral of China-U.S. relations and find a way for the two nations to coexist peacefully in the new era.
