Mao reiterated China’s stance that the balloon was intended for meteorological research and had strayed off course accidentally. She criticized the US for distorting facts and using the incident to fuel its bullying and hegemonic behavior.
Blinken’s postponed visit, which had been scheduled for February, occurred after the balloon incident. Although it marked a renewed engagement between the two nations, China continues to reject talks between their militaries. Recent incidents, such as Chinese warplanes and naval ships acting provocatively in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, have further strained the relationship. These actions contravene protocols agreed upon by both countries to avoid such confrontations.
During Blinken’s visit, China reiterated its objections to US support for Taiwan and accused the US of hindering its access to advanced computer chip manufacturing technology. Additionally, China has been accused of intellectual property theft by the US. Despite acknowledging the substantial differences between the two nations, Blinken stressed the need to manage their relationship, admitting that they vehemently disagree on several issues.
