Channel 5’s Show Faces Backlash as Viewers Criticize Sending Wealthy Twins to Work on a Farm in Pembrokeshire, After Exchanging Lives with a Couple Surviving on £152 a Week: ‘Not Your Typical Holiday!’

Channel 5 has received criticism from viewers after featuring two millionaire brothers experiencing life on a farm in order to understand the wealth divide. Leeds-based twin brothers Hassan and Hussien, who own a cosmetic dental practice, traded places with insurance workers Gary and Janet, who live on a tight budget of £157 per week. The twins paid £300 for the opportunity to work on a farm in Pembrokeshire. However, viewers argued that this was not a true representation of the lives of those on a lower income and accused the producers of being out of touch.
One fan wrote, “Producers have made a mistake this week… do they actually believe poor people go on farm labouring holidays!? Ridiculous programme made by our out of touch producers.”
Hassan and Hussien, who grew up on a council estate in Leeds and enjoy luxury holidays and cars, found the farm experience challenging. They were used to a lavish lifestyle, travelling every month, dining with a private chef, and recently hiring a private jet. They admitted that their night in a tent on the farm was the worst sleep they had ever had and hoped to book a massage once they returned home. However, as the week went on, they came to appreciate farm life and even donated £3000 to the farmer.
Viewers were skeptical that Gary and Janet would willingly choose to do farm work for leisure, especially considering they were sent on a luxury holiday to Iceland as part of the show. One viewer commented, “I’m not buying that the poor couple go on farm volunteering holidays #richholidaypoorholiday.” Another added, “What’s with that farm labouring holiday… it’s no holiday at all. Just cheap labour for the farmer! I would literally prefer to stay at home and go on day trips.”
While Hassan and Hussien toiled on the farm, Gary and Janet enjoyed a luxurious trip to Iceland, where Gary eventually proposed to Janet after years of financial struggle. The couple, who also work as an insurance worker and a Michael Bublé tribute act, respectively, have been concerned about affording a wedding. Their trip to Iceland, which included activities like whale watching and visiting active volcanoes, proved to be a significant change for them.
Despite initially questioning why anyone with money would travel to Iceland, Janet started to appreciate the unique experiences the country had to offer. Ultimately, she said yes to Gary’s proposal during a magical snow-covered morning at their hotel.
The show “Rich Holiday Poor Holiday” can be viewed on the Channel 5 player.
