A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of El Salvador, shaking several countries in Central America from Nicaragua to Guatemala. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was 27 miles south of Intipuca, El Salvador, at a depth of 43 miles. The earthquake was felt strongly in El Salvador’s capital, causing residents to run into the streets, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Lawmakers in the country’s Legislative Assembly temporarily evacuated the building during the quake. The Environment Ministry stated that there was no threat of a tsunami.
In Nicaragua, the earthquake was also felt strongly in the capital and along the Pacific coast. The Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo reported no immediate victims in the country.
