CDC reports that approximately 20% of adults have received a depression diagnosis

According to a study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20% of adults have received a diagnosis of depression at some point in their lives. The report indicates that the prevalence of depression varies significantly by state, with West Virginia having the highest proportion of residents diagnosed, reaching 27.5%.

The researchers from the CDC and Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Tennessee noted that there is a notable geographic variation in depression rates, with the highest estimates found in the Appalachian and southern Mississippi Valley regions. This report offers up-to-date estimates of national, state-level, and county-level depression prevalence among adults who have reported a lifetime diagnosis of depression.

The states with the highest depression rates, following West Virginia, include Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Vermont, Alabama, Louisiana, Washington, Missouri, and Montana. It is worth mentioning that women are disproportionately affected, with almost 25% receiving a depression diagnosis compared to 13.3% of men. Additionally, there is an age gap in diagnosis rates, with over 20% of adults aged 18 to 24 being diagnosed, while only 14.2% of those aged 65 and older receive the same diagnosis.

In response to the findings, Dr. Rebecca Brendel, the president of the American Psychiatric Association, commented on the expected increase in depression rates among Americans due to the significant stress and isolation experienced in recent years. She acknowledged the lasting impact on mental health caused by the disruptions brought about over the past three years.
