CDC: Majority of children involved in Ohio measles outbreak were not vaccinated

A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that more than 90% of children affected by the measles outbreak in Ohio last year were not vaccinated. This report, which was published on Friday, examined a total of 85 confirmed cases, all of which were found in central Ohio and predominantly among children under the age of 5. Of these cases, 94% did not receive the MMR vaccine, which provides protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. The average age of those infected was 1 year, the age at which children become eligible for the MMR vaccine. Shockingly, only 5% of patients had received their first dose. The outbreak was officially confirmed on November 9, 2022, and was declared over on February 4, with no reported deaths but 36 hospitalizations due to dehydration. The CDC emphasizes the importance of timely MMR vaccination and urges healthcare facilities, medical providers, and childcare centers serving undervaccinated populations to remain vigilant for measles. This report supports previous data released by Columbus Public Health, which also highlighted the high number of unvaccinated children affected in last year’s outbreak.
