CDC Investigates Death of Brazilian Woman from Swine Flu, Prompting Fear

Brazilian woman succumbs to SWINE FLU: Fatality sparks panic and CDC investigation

Health officials in the US are currently investigating the tragic death of a Brazilian woman who became an uncommon victim of swine flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be examining samples collected from the 42-year-old patient who died from an H1N1 variant circulating in pigs.

The fatality has caused concern because the woman had no direct contact with pigs, potentially suggesting transmission from another individual.

Although the woman had two close contacts who worked at a nearby farm, both of them tested negative for influenza and never displayed respiratory symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO), collaborating with the CDC on the case, has declared that the risk to the public remains “low” and there is currently “no evidence” of further transmission.

Occasional cases of H1N1 swine flu spillovers are recorded every year in the US, usually connected to agricultural workers or fairs, but they rarely result in fatalities.

Last year, there were six documented cases, with the most recent occurring in September at a fairground in Michigan. In that particular instance, the patient had contact with an infected pig.

Scientists are worried that the next pandemic could emerge from flu viruses such as H1N1, which can be transmitted by pigs.Follow Google News
