CDC discontinues printed COVID-19 vaccination cards: farewell to a pandemic era keepsake

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has ceased printing coronavirus vaccination cards due to the discontinuation of vaccine distribution by the federal government.

Once considered essential for access to places like restaurants, festivals, and bars, these cards have now become largely obsolete since the pandemic’s end.

In late 2020, the CDC shipped over 980 million cards to Americans when the first vaccines became available.

Individuals who have misplaced their card can request their immunization record from the location where they received the vaccine or through a state immunization registry. Depending on the state, digital cards may also be available.

“One positive aspect during the pandemic was having increased autonomy over our patient records, particularly the immunization record,” said Jeff Chorath, the manager of Washington state’s immunization information system, in an interview with the Associated Press.

Washington state offers digital vaccination records for its residents.

The federal government does not maintain vaccination records.

Heidi Gurov, a nurse consultant at the Wyoming Department of Health, advises individuals to keep their vaccination cards in a safe place, similar to any other health record.
