A 27-year-old man from Los Angeles has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of touching an intimate part of another person and has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and 120 hours of community service for his actions at a storage facility in Irvine. Rafael Ezequiel Cortez entered his guilty plea on Monday, and as part of the plea deal, charges of battery and false imprisonment were dismissed.
The incident took place on June 25, 2022, at Extra Space Storage on 17 Shield, according to the Irvine police. The victim reported that she was waiting for the elevator when two men exited. However, one of the men reentered the elevator after she got in. Surveillance video confirmed her account.
The victim, speaking to ABC7, stated that the attacker lunged at her inside the elevator, pulling down her sports bra and grabbing her breast. She managed to push him away and defend herself, sustaining injuries to her face. She eventually escaped from the elevator on the first floor of the facility while the suspect fled and got into a moving truck, as reported by the police.
It was later discovered that Cortez was employed by a moving company that was present at the storage facility on the day of the assault.
