Aug. 30 (UPI) — Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, displayed exceptional focus and skill, advancing to the second round of the 2023 U.S. Open. Notable players such as Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula also showcased their talent, securing victories on Day 2 of the tournament.
Alcaraz, the top-seeded men’s player, dominated his match against Dominik Koepfer, leading 6-2, 3-2 before his opponent retired due to injury. Alcaraz expressed satisfaction with his performance and aims to maintain his high level of play in the upcoming rounds.
Other top men’s players, including Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, and Andrey Rublev, also advanced to the next round with impressive performances.
Medvedev demonstrated his dominance by defeating Attila Balazs in straight sets, while Sinner secured a victory over Yannick Hanfmann. Rublev showcased his skills against Arthur Cazaux, winning in straight sets as well.
In the women’s category, Jessica Pegula advanced with a straight-sets triumph over Camila Giorgi. Pegula, the third-seeded player, executed her game plan effectively, noting the importance of adapting to the opponent’s style of play.
Aryna Sabalenka, the second-ranked women’s player, achieved victory against Maryna Zanevska in just 78 minutes. Sabalenka’s powerful serves and strategic gameplay allowed her to secure the win.
Several other top women’s players, including Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova, and Daria Kasatkina, also moved forward in the tournament.
The U.S. Open continues with exciting matches featuring Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas among the top men’s players. Notable women’s players Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Karolina Muchova will also compete in the next round.
