Captivating Wildlife Footage: Hungry Bear Surprises Birthday Celebrant by Snatching Lunch from Picnic Table

MEXICO CITY (AP) — In a remarkable act of bravery, a Mexican mother shielded her son from a bear that invaded their picnic table and devoured the birthday dinner meant for the boy. The incident took place at Chipinque Park near the city of Monterrey, where Silvia Macías and her son Santiago were celebrating his 15th birthday.

As they sat down to enjoy their meal, a bear suddenly appeared and quickly consumed their tacos, enchiladas, and other treats. Macías, determined to protect Santiago, sat calmly just inches away from the bear’s mouth, shielding her son’s eyes with her hand. She kept her gaze averted, not wanting to provoke any aggressive behavior from the bear.

Macías explained her concerns, saying, “Santiago is very afraid of animals, even a cat or a dog scares him a lot. I didn’t want him to see the bear and possibly scream or run, risking a reaction from the bear.”

Prior to their outing, Macías and her friend Angela Chapa had discussed the possibility of encountering a bear. Although bear sightings were not uncommon in the park, they were more likely to occur in the early morning or evening. Nevertheless, they had a plan in place.

“We decided to play a game where we cover Santiago’s eyes and remain still like statues,” Macías recalled. And that’s exactly what they did. Santiago remained motionless even as the bear growled and ate just inches away. He admitted to feeling scared during the ordeal.

Angela, their resourceful friend who captured the incident on video, knew the proper protocol for a black bear encounter—never run. Spotting a plate of uneaten enchiladas, she tossed them far away from the table to distract the bear, as it seemed to prefer french fries. Showing the enchiladas to the bear before throwing them ensured its attention.

As expected, the bear followed the food, allowing Angela to stand between the bear and Macías and Santiago. This allowed them to retreat slowly and quietly. Eventually, the bear moved on.

Santiago’s birthday dinner was replaced, and the family managed to escape unharmed. Macías humbly stated, “I don’t consider myself a hero. I’m just a mother who protected her son.”
