Capitol Police: False Alarm Prompted Lockdown

The authorities issued a shelter-in-place order and conducted a search in Senate office buildings near the US Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, following a report of an active shooter. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger stated that the security response was triggered by a “concerning 911 call” regarding a possible active shooter. However, after a floor-by-floor search of the three buildings, nothing suspicious was found, leading Manger to suggest that the call may have been a false alarm. There were no reports of shots fired or any victims.

The lockdown was initiated when local police received a call alerting them about a “heavyset Hispanic male wearing body armor” inside the Hart Senate Office Building, one of the structures near the Capitol where senators and their staffs have their offices. As officers conducted a thorough search, people in the Russell Senate Office Building were evacuated and instructed to seek shelter in a secured room while maintaining silence and turning off their electronic devices.

Approximately 90 minutes later, Chief Manger confirmed that all three Senate office buildings had been cleared and deemed safe. The incident occurred during a period of heightened security ahead of Donald Trump’s expected court appearance on Thursday, with law enforcement agencies anticipating possible disruptions from his supporters. Preparations for such situations have been underway for weeks, and a comprehensive security plan was in place.
