Capita recruits Adolfo Hernandez, former Amazon employee, in response to cyber attack

Capita, the London-listed company responsible for collecting the BBC TV licence fee, has appointed Adolfo Hernandez, an Amazon executive, as its new CEO to lead its recovery efforts following a £20m cyberattack earlier this year. Hernandez, who currently heads Amazon’s telecoms division, will succeed Jon Lewis. Lewis, who has been in the top position since 2017, will retire at the end of the year but will remain involved in the leadership transition until July.

This appointment comes in the wake of the cyber attack that occurred two months ago, compromising customer, supplier, and staff data. Capita’s IT systems were completely locked down in March, resulting in a £20m financial impact. In response to the incident, the Russian Black Basta cybercrime gang threatened to release stolen information on the dark web.

Capita clarified that Lewis had been discussing his retirement prior to the ransomware attack. Following the announcement of his departure, the company’s shares experienced a surge in mid-morning trading on Monday, eventually stabilizing near Friday’s closing price of 27.9p.

Hernandez, who previously successfully revived professional services firm SDL plc through a merger with translation services company RWS Holdings, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has held positions at Alcatel-Lucent and IBM in the past.
