A 34-year-old man has entered a guilty plea for his involvement in the tragic stabbing death of a man who was dating his best friend’s ex-girlfriend, with whom they share two daughters.
Adan Zapot-Leyva has pleaded guilty to one count of murder and is set to be sentenced on August 16th.
Meanwhile, Humberto Rodriguez-Martinez, the co-defendant in the case, remains at large.
In a separate incident on June 20, 2021, Zapot-Leyva also pleaded guilty to assault with force likely to cause serious bodily harm.
Zapot-Leyva has confessed to participating in the killing of 32-year-old Daniel Reyes on October 18, 2017.
According to the police, they received a report of a fight at the intersection of Santa Ana and Helena streets. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim with stab wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigations indicate that Rodriguez-Martinez held a grudge towards Reyes for dating his ex-girlfriend. Testimony provided during Zapot-Leyva’s preliminary hearing revealed that Rodriguez-Martinez and his ex-girlfriend have two daughters together. After their breakup, she began dating Reyes a few months later.
Police state that Zapot-Leyva and Rodriguez-Martinez lay in wait for Reyes as he left his girlfriend’s residence in Anaheim.
