Canadian Technology from Alberta Detects Early Stage of Alzheimer’s through Speech Analysis.

Researchers in Alberta have developed a machine-learning model which identifies audio cues suggesting early onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The technology listens for specific speech patterns such as longer pauses, word length or complexity, and speech intelligibility, allowing researchers to distinguish between patients and healthy individuals with an accuracy rate of 70-75%. Once established, it is hoped the technology can be formatted as an app allowing regular access to early detection tools via smartphones. Its creators hope it could also be utilised as a remote, multilingual health care tool using a language-agnostic approach.
