Canadian premiers gather for second day in Winnipeg as union leaders assemble

Canadian premiers and territorial leaders convened at the Fort Garry hotel in Winnipeg for the second day of an all-premiers meeting. This three-day conference focused on discussions about health care and strategies to utilize a $46-billion funding investment from the federal government. While the leaders gathered at the hotel, health care and labour unions also came together nearby to express their opposition to the privatization of health care.

Bea Bruske, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, emphasized the importance of action plans and relief for both patients and health care workers. She called for recruiting, retaining, and supporting health care workers across the country. Bruske also advocated for the introduction of a publicly funded, universally delivered pharmacare program.

Steven Staples, national director of the Canadian Health Coalition, stressed the need for investing in the public health care system and addressing issues such as wait times and access.

Provinces and territories are expected to submit plans to meet certain targets and receive the multi-billion-dollar investment. Quebec is the only province yet to accept the funding offer. Manitoba Nurses Union president Darlene Jackson expressed support for the conditions attached to the federal funding and emphasized the need for better staffing and long-term plans.

Manitoba premier Heather Stefanson announced that another all-premiers meeting will take place later in the year to further discuss healthcare. She highlighted the province’s $200 million investment to attract 20,000 new health care workers, stating that they were already making significant progress.

In addition to health care, other topics discussed at the conference included relief from carbon taxes and clean fuel standards for Alberta and other Atlantic provinces. Ontario premier Doug Ford raised concerns about infrastructure, affordability, and the need for the federal government to provide more support to the people.

More information about the discussions will be available once the meetings conclude on June 12.
