Canada’s military to gradually eliminate outdated housing allowance – National

Canada’s military has implemented a new program to gradually eliminate its outdated housing benefit following feedback from members who faced losing the payments.

The Armed Forces announced in March their plans to introduce a new housing allowance based on salary rather than the location where a soldier is posted.

This change would have made thousands of people eligible for the new allowance while discontinuing it for thousands of others.

In an update to its members, the director general of compensation and benefits, Brig.-Gen. Virginia Tattersall, stated that an interim program will gradually phase out the old benefit by decreasing payments until July 2026.

Eligible members will be automatically enrolled in the new program and should receive a lump-sum payment to cover the summer months sometime in the fall.
