Canada suspends support to Niger government in light of military coup

Ottawa has announced its decision to cease providing financial assistance to the government of Niger following a military coup in the West African nation.

The leaders of the military junta have until Sunday to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who was democratically elected, or they may face foreign intervention from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Global Affairs Canada expressed its concerns in a statement, emphasizing that the coup poses a serious threat to democracy and stability in the region.

The Canadian government will suspend all direct funding to the government of Niger, while continuing to provide assistance to vulnerable populations in areas such as health and education.

“Canada reiterates its solidarity with the people of Niger and its support for democracy, peace, inclusive governance, and the rule of law. Given the current circumstances, it would be impractical to maintain direct support for the government of Niger while ensuring the effective and intentional use of funds,” the statement read.

“We are concerned about the impact that this forced seizure of power will have on the people of Niger, especially the most vulnerable. Respect for democracy is crucial for stability and cooperation efforts in Niger,” stated Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen.

The Global Affairs Department revealed that a bilateral development deal with Niger, signed in 2020, was expected to reach an annual budget of $10 million by 2026.

For the 2021-2022 fiscal year, the program disbursed $2.71 million.

Canada’s total international assistance to Niger amounted to $59.33 million, with $8.7 million dedicated to humanitarian assistance.
