California’s Legal Action Targets Organizations Pushing Unverified Abortion Pill Reversal Treatment

California has taken legal action against two organizations for promoting unproven treatments that claim to reverse medication abortions. The state filed a lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court on Thursday, accusing Heartbeat International, Inc., an anti-abortion charity with a network of pro-life pregnancy resource centers, and RealOptions Obria, a group that operates five clinics in Northern California, of providing incorrect information to vulnerable pregnant individuals.

California Attorney General Robert Bonta (D) stated, “Those who are struggling with the complex decision to get an abortion deserve support and trustworthy guidance — not lies and misinformation.” He emphasized that the evidence shows the majority of individuals do not regret their decision to have an abortion, with over 95% of patients later confirming they made the right choice.

The complaint, obtained by CalMatters, refutes the organizations’ claims of being able to “reverse” the effects of mifepristone, also known as the abortion pill. The state argues that there is no evidence supporting the reversal claim or the effectiveness of the so-called “abortion pill reversal” protocol.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has also discredited these treatments, stating on their website that they are not based on science and do not meet clinical standards.

Heartbeat International responded to the lawsuit through an emailed statement, expressing their belief that women who regret their decision to undergo a chemical abortion should have the opportunity to try and save their pregnancies. RealOptions Obria has not yet responded to requests for comment from The Hill.

Legislation requiring physicians to mention the possibility of reversing medication abortions with progesterone doses has been proposed in some states. However, medical professionals and organizations argue that these mandates are not based on scientific evidence and only serve to confuse and stigmatize women, compromising patient care and safety.
