A Canadian businessman and philanthropist from British Columbia is sharing his firsthand account of his experience with OceanGate, the company whose submersible recently went missing during a mission to explore the Titanic shipwreck. Ron Toigo disclosed that on his initial trip on the vessel, they too encountered difficulties at the bottom of the ocean. However, he felt relatively safe throughout the ordeal. The Titan, a carbon-fiber and titanium vessel, has the ability to dive over 13,000 feet and accommodate five individuals, providing access to the Titanic wreck in the Atlantic Ocean. OceanGate’s website states that the company successfully completed trips to the site in 2021 and 2022.
The Titan currently has five people onboard, and it was equipped with a 96-hour supply of oxygen when it set off on its mission on Sunday. According to David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate, the oxygen should, in theory, last until Thursday afternoon.
Toigo expressed his appreciation for the numerous safety precautions taken before the expedition commenced, ensuring that the team was well-prepared for any possible issues. He mentioned that provisions were made for a contingency plan in case they needed to remain at the bottom until a Navy sub or another rescue team could retrieve them.
Toigo emphasized that he never felt unsafe at any point during his voyage. He confidently believes that the crew of the Titan will be fine. He acknowledged his concern for the families of those onboard and the anxiety they must be experiencing. However, based on his knowledge and experience, he has faith that a positive resolution will be reached; it’s just a matter of time.
