Washington — A former Broadway actor and defendant in the January 6th Capitol breach case has been acquitted of the remaining charges against him. The federal judge ruled that the evidence did not prove his involvement with the far-right Oath Keepers group in obstructing Congress. Court records confirm this decision.

James Beeks, known for his work on Broadway, was arrested in 2021 during a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He was later indicted on multiple felony counts. Prosecutors alleged that Beeks joined the Oath Keepers and participated in the Capitol breach. However, after initially planning to go to trial, Beeks and co-defendant Donovan Crowl opted for a stipulated bench trial, where the defense and prosecutors agreed to a set of facts and left the decision to the judge. Two counts were considered in the trial — conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and civil disorder. The remaining charges were dropped by the government.

The agreed-upon set of facts revealed that Beeks, before January 6th, 2021, saw Oath Keepers messages online and traveled to Washington, D.C. However, the judge determined that there was little evidence to prove Beeks’ involvement in a planned conspiracy with the Oath Keepers. Beeks is no longer a member of the group. On the other hand, Crowl was convicted of both counts.

Beeks is only the second defendant in the January 6th case to be completely acquitted at trial. The trial came after the conviction of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and other codefendants for seditious conspiracy. Crowl is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
