Brief encounter: Mother survives crash leaving four kids stranded in Amazon

New details have surfaced about the 40-day survival of four indigenous children in the Amazon jungle after their single-engine plane crashed in Colombia on May 1. The eldest child, a 13-year-old girl, is said to have played a crucial role in keeping her siblings – aged 9, 4 and 1 – alive. Heartbreakingly, their mother survived for just four days after the crash. She reportedly told the children to leave her behind in the hope that they would be rescued. The children were eventually found by rescue teams, dehydrated, with bug bites, and hiding in tree trunks to protect themselves from snakes and mosquitoes. They have been rehydrated and are expected to be in hospital for at least two weeks. It remains unclear why the children were not found earlier, but it is believed they may have been scared of the uniformed search parties and dogs and attempted to stay hidden. One dog, thought to have spent some time with the children, has yet to be found.
