An Oregon woman who is battling breast cancer has come forward after allegedly being barred from her medical clinic for questioning the presence of a transgender flag in the medical setting. Marlene Barbera, 55, had been a patient at the Richmond Family Medicine Clinic in Portland until just weeks before her scheduled mastectomy when she was informed by a letter that she was no longer welcome due to her disrespectful and hurtful remarks about the LGBTQ community and staff. Barbera expressed her concerns about the trans flag in the waiting room via a MyChart message to the clinic, stating that she did not feel comfortable with its presence. She cited her fear of harassment from trans activists as a reason why she found it daunting to undergo medical treatment in a setting that represented the same movement. After being dropped from Richmond, Barbera underwent her double mastectomy at another clinic and is currently in recovery. However, she now does not have a primary care doctor following her dismissal. Barbera mentioned that she has experienced anxiety and depression as a result of the situation, which has triggered her long-standing struggle with mental health. Despite receiving legal advice, she is uncertain about her next steps.
While doctors have the right to deny medical treatment to patients for various reasons, OHSU Family Medicine clinic, which offers trans healthcare for children, stated that they encourage support and involvement from parents of patients under the age of 15. The clinic cannot confirm whether Barbera was a patient due to privacy regulations but shared that they have faced extreme harassment as a result of the reported incident, including a threatening phone call that led to the evacuation of the Richmond clinic. In response to the coverage of Barbera’s story, the clinic’s employees have also faced threats, racial slurs, and anti-LGBTQIA+ hate speech. The AFSCME union representing OHSU employees expressed concerns and confirmed that the fears of the Richmond staff had been confirmed.
