Oct. 5 (UPI) — In a recent incident that has sparked controversy, the U.S. military reportedly shot down a Turkish drone over the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces-controlled region in northeastern Syria’s Al-Hasaka province. This incident occurred at a time when Turkish forces were allegedly targeting civil installations, oil facilities, and multiple other sites in Hasaka. According to local authorities, the Turkish State has been accused of committing war crimes by specifically targeting infrastructure and civilian facilities, resulting in casualties and widespread devastation.
As tensions escalate between Turkey and the Kurdish population, the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party), a militant group considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, has claimed responsibility for an attack in the Kurdish city of Ankara. In response, the Turkish military conducted airstrikes in Iraq against targets affiliated with the PKK.
Amidst these conflicts, the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have become entangled in the accusations. Turkey alleges that the Syrian Democratic Forces, who received support from the U.S. in their fight against ISIS militants, have connections to the PKK.
