A tragic incident has left a Sylmar family devastated as they mourn the loss of their beloved 87-year-old grandmother. The elderly woman lost her life when a suspected impaired driver collided with the parked car she was exiting.
The collision occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday in the 14000 block of Foothill Boulevard. A northbound Ford Fusion unexpectedly struck the stationary vehicle. Thankfully, the female driver of the parked car sustained only minor injuries. However, tragically, her passenger, identified as Aurora Reynozo, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries upon impact.
As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that the allegedly impaired driver of the Fusion fled the scene, continuing north on Foothill Boulevard. The reckless driver went on to collide with several other vehicles before finally coming to a stop. Law enforcement identified the driver as 33-year-old Juan Martinez, who has a prior DUI record. The authorities subsequently arrested him on suspicion of murder. Currently, he is being held in custody with a bail set at $2 million.
The victim’s son, Joel Reynozo, shared heartbreaking details about the incident. He revealed that his mother and the other woman were returning home from a church Bible study session when the tragic accident occurred. Joel’s mother was in the process of being dropped off by one of her close friends.
According to Reynozo, the impact of the collision was so intense that his mother was forcefully thrown from the parked car, ultimately landing on her head. In a rush, he ran outside their family home upon hearing the collision and discovered his mother’s injured body.
Joel fondly remembered his mother as a compassionate and nurturing individual. She had a selfless nature and was always attentive to the needs of others. Alongside her nurturing personality, she possessed remarkable cooking skills. Her unwavering devotion to helping others and her old-fashioned values made her truly one-of-a-kind.
