Breaking News: South Africa Recalls All Diplomats from Israel Amid Tensions

South Africa is calling back all of its diplomats from Tel Aviv in response to Israel’s intense air strikes on Gaza on Sunday night. Israel’s bombardment on Gaza was one of the most severe since the war began a month ago, resulting in about 200 casualties according to Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital.

On Monday, South Africa’s government, known for its vocal support of the Palestinian cause, strongly condemned Israel. Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor stated during a press conference that South Africa is withdrawing its diplomats due to concerns about the continued killing of children and innocent civilians in the Palestinian territories. Minister Pandor added, “We believe the nature of Israel’s response has become one of collective punishment. It is important for us to demonstrate South Africa’s concern while also emphasizing the need for a comprehensive cessation of hostilities.”

Israel has yet to comment on South Africa’s statement but claims to be working to minimize civilian casualties and accuses Hamas, the governing body of the Gaza Strip, of using non-combatants as human shields.

In recent developments, on 7 October, Hamas fighters – a group classified as a terrorist organization by the UK, US, and other Western powers – killed over 1,400 people in Israel and took more than 230 hostages, including an unidentified South African national. As a response, Israel has pledged to destroy Hamas and has conducted numerous air strikes on Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry reports that over 10,000 people have been killed since the start of the siege.

South Africa’s government has long supported the Palestinian cause and frequently draws parallels between the Palestinian struggle and its own fight against apartheid. Foreign Minister Pandor explained that recalling diplomats is a “normal practice,” and the envoys will provide a comprehensive briefing to the government. Based on this briefing, the government will determine whether it can provide assistance or if a continued relationship with Israel is tenable.

Additionally, South Africa’s cabinet accused Israeli ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky of making disparaging remarks about South Africans, including government officials who criticized Israel’s government. The cabinet statement stated that these remarks make the ambassador’s position increasingly untenable.

South Africa is not the first country to recall its diplomats from Israel in protest against the military operation in Gaza. Chad, Chile, and Colombia have also taken this step.
