Mexico’s Supreme Court Decriminalizes Abortion Nationwide

Associated Press

In a groundbreaking decision, Mexico’s Supreme Court has decriminalized abortion across the nation, marking a significant milestone in reproductive rights. This ruling comes two years after the court declared abortion legal in one northern state, triggering a gradual process of decriminalization on a state-by-state basis. The recent approval in the central state of Aguascalientes was the twelfth state to adopt this progressive stance, putting pressure on the remaining states to align their laws with the Supreme Court’s ruling.

While access to abortion remains limited in parts of the United States, Latin America has been witnessing a growing trend of liberalizing abortion restrictions. Mexico City was actually the first jurisdiction in Mexico to decriminalize abortion fifteen years ago, setting an example for the rest of the country.

The Information Group for Chosen Reproduction (GIRE), a non-governmental organization, hailed the court’s decision as a significant victory for women’s reproductive rights. They emphasized that no woman, pregnant individual, or healthcare worker can be prosecuted for seeking or providing an abortion anymore. Furthermore, the ruling mandates that the federal public health service and all federal health institutions must offer abortion to anyone who requests it, effectively removing the crime of abortion from the federal penal code.
