During an interview with Indian news show Firstpost, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not be arrested if he chose to attend the Group of 20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro next year.
Lula confirmed that Putin will be invited to the forum, noting that he did not attend this year’s G20 in New Delhi. Lula stated, “I believe that Putin can go easily to Brazil. What I can say to you is that if I’m president of Brazil, and he comes to Brazil, there’s no way he will be arrested.”
Lula also revealed his plans to attend a BRICS meeting in Russia before next year’s G20.

The statement from Lula comes in the wake of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Putin, accusing him of war crimes related to the forced deportation of Ukrainian children. Russia denies these allegations. The G20 this year acknowledged the impact of the Ukraine conflict but did not specifically mention Russia.
