Inter Miami’s China tour scheduled for this month has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. The team had previously announced friendly matches against Qingdao Hainiu on November 5 and Chengdu Rongcheng on November 8.
The club’s social media announcement featured Lionel Messi, the recent recipient of his eighth Ballon d’Or.
However, Inter Miami released a statement on Wednesday stating, “The tour promoter, NSN, has informed Inter Miami CF that the China Tour has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances in China.
The club remains committed to expanding its global presence and will continue to explore future opportunities with NSN.”
NSN expressed its regret and explained that the cancellation was in light of the recent passing of former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
The trip to China would have marked Inter Miami’s first international tour. Xavier Asensi, the club’s chief business officer, had expressed the desire to “share the passion as we reach new audiences.”
Messi played a crucial role in helping Inter Miami secure the 2023 Leagues Cup title. However, he faced setbacks with missed games in September and October due to what was initially described as fatigue but later confirmed as a muscle injury.
During last month’s international break, Messi made a comeback with Argentina and subsequently received his record-extending Ballon d’Or prize in Paris.
