Breaking News: Key Border Crossing Reopens Between Pakistan and Afghanistan After 9-Day Closure

The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, a key northwestern border, reopened on Friday after a nine-day closure caused by clashes between border forces, according to officials from both countries.

On September 6, Pakistan closed the Torkham border following a firefight between guards from both nations. Pakistan accused Taliban authorities of constructing “illegal structures” in the area.

Nasir Khan, a Pakistani government official, stated that the crossing reopened on Friday morning. Ismatullah Yaqoob, Afghanistan’s commissioner in Torkham, confirmed that stranded trucks and pedestrians have started crossing the border.

A representative from the Pakistan and Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce welcomed the reopening of the border crossing.

Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, spokesperson for the Chamber, stated, “The reopening has brought an end to the nine-day-long problems faced by traders on both sides of the border.” He also mentioned that traders have suffered significant losses in perishable goods during the closure.

Pakistan’s envoy to Afghanistan, Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani, had a meeting with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Kabul the day before. The discussion revolved around the recent increase in terrorist incidents and the closure of the Torkham border.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of sheltering militants and allowing them to launch attacks from its territory. However, Afghanistan has denied these allegations.
