Breaking News: Joe Biden Tests Negative for COVID Amid Rising Death and Hospitalization Rates

President Joe Biden tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday, a day after first lady Jill Biden received a positive coronavirus test result, the White House said.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters that Jill Biden is experiencing “mild symptoms” and will remain in Delaware for the rest of the week.

The president, on the other hand, has not shown any COVID symptoms thus far but is following several precautions based on his physician’s advice,” Jean-Pierre added.

“Since the president was with the first lady yesterday, he will wear a mask indoors and around people, in accordance with the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” said Jean-Pierre. “However, he will remove his mask when he is sufficiently distanced from others, both indoors and outdoors.”

Both Biden and Army Capt. Larry L. Taylor, a Vietnam veteran who was at the White House to receive the Medal of Honor on Tuesday, wore masks upon entering the East Room for the ceremony.

Biden will undergo testing before his departure for India on Thursday for the Group of 20 summit, as stated by Jean-Pierre during the White House briefing.

Jean-Pierre further mentioned that the administration will be providing more tools to combat COVID as we approach the fall and winter months, with updated boosters expected to be released this month. ABC News reported that the shots could be available “as early as next week.”

The EG.5 variant, also known as Eris, continues to be the dominant strain in COVID cases in the U.S., comprising 21.5% of total cases, according to estimates released by the CDC for the two-week period ending Sept. 2. Another variant, FL.1.5.1, accounted for over 14% of cases, as shown in the estimates.

The president of Moderna stated last month that their clinical trials demonstrated the efficacy of their updated booster against the rapidly spreading EG.5 and FL 1.5.1 strains.

All of this comes as COVID continues to spread across the country.

Hospital admissions related to COVID increased by 15.7% in the week ending Aug. 26, while coronavirus-related deaths rose by 17.6% during the same period, according to the CDC.
