Breaking News: Japan Rail Pass Prices to Surge – Plan Your Trip Before the Hike!

Are you planning a trip from Tokyo to Kyoto? Well, here’s a money-saving tip for you: the seven-day pass is worth its price after just one round trip! In fact, savvy travelers can save thousands of dollars by getting this pass.

Brace yourselves! In April, the JR Group, responsible for operating the extensive shinkansen network along with local and regional lines, announced an increase in prices for the ordinary class, seven-day rail pass. The price will jump to 50,000 yen (approximately $342) from 29,650 yen (around $203). Additionally, Green Car class seven-day passes will go up to 70,000 yen from 39,600 yen. The 14- and 21-day passes will also see similar increases ranging from 65 to 71 percent.

A spokesperson for the JR Group emphasized that despite recent improvements to their services, like extending shinkansen lines and enhancing reservation systems, prices have remained unchanged since the establishment of the company. They added that the benefits customers receive far exceed the price paid. However, in light of these advancements, the price revision was deemed necessary to reflect the true value of the pass.

But don’t worry, the changes aren’t all gloomy for travelers! Previously, the rail pass didn’t cover Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen lines. These trains offered faster and more direct routes between major stations, making them more convenient for passengers. However, starting in October, pass holders can access a Nozomi-Mizuho add-on for a supplemental fee. This will provide additional travel options and alleviate the overcrowding issues experienced on the popular Tokaido shinkansen, most commonly used by tourists traveling between Tokyo and Osaka.
