Sept. 9 (UPI) — Reports indicate that a notorious Australian crime boss was shot dead in a daring attack at a Melbourne cafe on Saturday.
A statement from the police in the Australian state of Victoria confirmed that the shooting resulted in one fatality and one person sustaining serious injuries.
According to the police, emergency services were called to the scene after multiple shots were fired outside the cafe at around 10:20 a.m. The victim who died at the scene has not been officially identified, while the injured individual was hospitalized.
The police stated that they are currently investigating the incident, but it appears to be a targeted attack.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. and the Herald Sun have identified the slain individual as 50-year-old Gavin Preston, who had previously served 11 years in prison for defensive homicide in 2012.
Preston was released from prison earlier this year.
According to Acting Victoria Police Superintendent Mark Hatt, two suspects dressed in black approached the victims while they were eating and opened fire before fleeing the scene in a black SUV, which was later found abandoned.
Hatt stated that the police are considering possible links to organized crime and believe that the shooting is connected to such activities.
He also expressed his regret that the incident occurred in such a public manner, as there were other diners present at the time.
