Breaking News: Brace for Impending Impact as Hurricanes Norma and Tammy Approach Mexico and Leeward Islands

CNN reports that Hurricane Norma is set to hit Mexico’s Los Cabos resort area, bringing destructive winds, flash flooding, and a dangerous storm surge. This comes at the same time another hurricane, Hurricane Tammy, is affecting island nations in the Atlantic. Hurricane Norma, currently a Category 2 storm, is expected to reach Mexico’s Baja California Sur region later on Saturday. While it may weaken slightly before making landfall, it still poses a threat to the tourist-friendly area. In the Atlantic, Hurricane Tammy, a Category 1 storm, has triggered hurricane warnings for parts of the Leeward Islands. Both storms are not expected to impact the US. As of Saturday morning, Hurricane Norma has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and is located about 30 miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas. It is already bringing rain and tropical storm conditions to the region. A hurricane warning is in effect for parts of Baja California Sur, including Cabo San Lucas. The storm surge is likely to cause coastal flooding and be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Heavy rainfall and flooding are also expected, with rainfall totals of up to 18 inches possible. Hurricane Tammy, on the other hand, has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is centered around 50 miles east-southeast of Guadeloupe. It is forecasted to move near or over the Leeward Islands before moving north of the northern Leeward Islands on Sunday. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the storm’s center, while tropical storm-force winds extend up to 125 miles. Tammy is a rare late October hurricane, with only three hurricanes forming this far southeast in the Atlantic since 1900. The storm surge for the Leeward Islands could reach 1 to 3 feet, and heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and mudslides. Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected, with the possibility of higher amounts in certain areas. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain. Overall, conditions will improve as the storm moves out of the region. Hurricane experts had predicted unusual hurricane formation in late October due to the warm Atlantic Ocean. With Hurricane Tammy in the Atlantic, only two names remain on the standard storm name list before the hurricane center switches to an alternate list.
